Why Good Design Is the Smartest Investment You Can Make

When people think of hiring an interior designer, the first thought is often “That sounds expensive.” But here’s the truth: good design adds value faster than it adds cost.

The right designer doesn’t just make your home look beautiful - they save you money, stress, and time. A well-designed space avoids costly mistakes, makes the most of your budget, and ultimately creates a home that feels uniquely yours.

Design is transformation

Every project begins with goals and parameters. My role is to work within them and give you the best possible outcome for your home. That means:

  • Making smart choices about where to invest and where to save.
  • Curating ideas that suit your style (not mine).
  • Showing you why a suggestion works, so you feel confident in every decision.

And when clients trust my eye and expertise, something magical happens: the result is always more than they could have imagined or achieved alone.

A favourite example: Clapham Common Townhouse

One of my favourite projects was a Victorian townhouse near Clapham Common.

When my clients first saw it, they fell in love instantly. The charm was undeniable - but the house had been untouched for decades and was completely derelict. They knew it was a rare opportunity and wanted to get every detail right.

As busy professionals, they didn’t have the time to sift through endless decisions. And while they understood the importance of design, they weren’t sure if hiring a designer was something they could justify.

So, we started small - with a colour consultation.

That one session gave them clarity and confidence. From there, they asked me to take the reins, and I went on to design, furnish, and style their entire home.

The result?  A stunning family residence complete with a gym and au pair suite.   Elegant and timeless, yet full of life through thoughtful use of colour, pattern, and the client’s art.

They later told me they could never have achieved it on their own - and wouldn’t have been brave enough to make some of the design choices I proposed. Yet those very selections became their favourite features.

The transformation exceeded their expectations and gave them a home they’re proud of every single day.

The balance of old and new

I especially love working with period properties like this one. These homes are full of character, but they also come with quirks and challenges. The key is finding that perfect balance between restoring original features and introducing modern comfort.

Too much “period purity” and a home risks feeling like a museum. Go too modern, and you lose the soul of the building. The sweet spot lies in blending the two - preserving history while adding layers of design that make the house functional, stylish, and truly liveable for today.

Why this matters

Design isn’t about creating a “showroom.” It’s about creating a home that reflects you, supports how you live, and feels considered from every angle.

When done well, design pays for itself:

  • It adds long-term value to your property.
  • It saves you from costly missteps.
  • It gives you a home that makes daily life easier - and far more enjoyable.

If you’re dreaming of a home that feels like you - but better - I’d love to help.
