Hiring an Interior Designer - a Luxury or a Necessity?

Should I Hire An Interior Designer?

by Elena Romanova Interiors – Interior Designer Surrey & South West London

A few months ago, I called an electrician to assess the built-in lights on my patio.
He spent ten minutes inspecting, ten minutes chatting - and confirmed there was no easy fix. I handed over £60, thanked him, and still had no working lights.

It made me reflect — we rarely question paying tradespeople like electricians, plumbers, or decorators. Yet when it comes to hiring an interior designer, people often hesitate. Somehow, design is seen as a luxury rather than an essential part of how we live.

The truth: design isn’t just decoration - it’s strategy.

You could absolutely paint your own home or pick furniture online. But the choices that truly shape how you live - your lighting, layout, joinery, flooring, kitchen design, and storage - are long-term decisions. They affect your daily comfort and your property’s value for years to come.

As Joel Spolsky said, “Design adds value faster than it adds cost.”
And Red Adair famously added, “If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional, wait until you hire an amateur.”

Both ring true in design.

Why great spaces rarely happen by accident.

Pinterest and design magazines make it look simple — but creating a cohesive, functional, and beautiful space requires understanding scale, proportion, rhythm, colour, texture, and light.

It’s why even the most stylish clients often tell me, “We know what we like, but we don’t know how to bring it together.”

That’s where a designer steps in — not to take control, but to bring clarity.
To make sure every element supports your vision, lifestyle, and budget.

One wrong purchase often costs more than a consultation.

If you’ve ever bought a chair that looked perfect online but didn’t work in real life, you’ll know the frustration. A designer prevents those mistakes before they happen - and ensures that every decision, from furniture scale to finish selection, harmonises beautifully.

If you’re renovating or redesigning, even a single poor choice can cost more than a professional design consultation.
Design isn’t about spending more - it’s about spending wisely.

The most valuable investment? Your home.

Your property is likely your biggest asset. Designing it well - once and properly - not only enhances daily life but often increases its market value.

Hiring a designer isn’t indulgent. It’s intelligent.
Just as you’d trust an electrician with wiring, you can trust a designer with the flow, feel, and function of your home.

Great design is not a luxury. It’s the foundation of a home that works beautifully and feels like you.
